Techniques and applications
Can window graphics be applied to low-E or triple glazing?
Window graphics on insulating glass: assess the combination first
You cannot choose window stickers or film solely from the label HR++ or triple glazing. The exact glazing construction, film, printed design, installation side and surroundings together determine whether an application is suitable. Have that combination assessed before finalising the design or applying the film. “Suitable for glass” is not a complete product specification.
Temperature differences within the same pane matter
Thermal stress can develop when different areas of a pane heat up unevenly. Glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain identifies sunlight, glass characteristics, installation details and nearby shading among the relevant factors. Added posters, stickers or films can change energy-related properties and contribute to the risk of thermal breakage.
A pane is therefore more than an empty surface for a design. Include the frame and surroundings in your photographs. Blinds, shadows and existing graphics belong in the assessment. Saint-Gobain’s explanation describes the technical mechanism; it does not approve a particular film for your window.
Applying graphics inside is not automatically the right solution
An internally applied graphic may be easier to reach or better protected from people touching it outside. That practical advantage does not determine whether the film can be applied to that side of the glazing. Choose the installation side and product together.
In its window graphics guidance, manufacturer Contra Vision advises against internal application on low-E double glazing and triple glazing. It also discusses the effects of print, sunlight and internal blinds, among other factors. This is supplier guidance within the application described, rather than a universal ban covering every film. It illustrates why advice for one film cannot simply be transferred to another product without checking.
“We will apply it outside instead” is not a complete assessment either. The selected product and glazing construction must also be suitable for that approach. Discuss the graphic, positioning and access with SDLG through our window stickers and lettering service.
Include the actual design in the assessment
Provide the proposed window layout as well as the material description. Small individual letters, a frosted strip and a large printed panel are different applications. An assessment must match what will actually be installed.
- Give the dimensions of both the pane and the graphic separately.
- Show which areas remain clear and which will be printed or opaque.
- Include the intended colours and any white backing layer.
- Mention existing film or stickers and include them in the overall layout.
This guide does not establish a universally safe coverage percentage or a standard clear margin. Nor do descriptions such as “frosted”, “transparent” or “perforated” replace a check of the actual product combination. If the material or design changes, ask whether the previous assessment still applies.
The desired privacy effect is a separate choice. For the difference between frosted film and one-way vision, read office privacy window film: does it work at night?
Collect these details before installation
| Item | What should you provide? |
|---|---|
| Glazing | Available glazing or building documentation, type identification and coating information. |
| Window and surroundings | Photographs from both sides, dimensions of each pane, frames and existing blinds or shades. |
| Sunlight and shade | Façade orientation, periods of direct sunlight and visible shadows from nearby objects. |
| Design | Position, overall dimensions, colours, coverage and existing window graphics. |
| Installation | Preferred application side, access, location and intended duration of use. |
If you do not know the glazing construction, request available information from the building manager, owner or glazing supplier. Include a legible photograph of existing markings, but do not treat a photograph alone as a complete identification of the construction. SDLG discusses what information is still needed and whether the glazing or film supplier needs to provide a further assessment.
Frequently asked questions about film on HR++ and triple glazing
Does a small test sticker prove the entire window is suitable?
No. A trial might help assess appearance or adhesion at that position. It does not automatically establish thermal suitability for a much larger area, different print or different placement. Define what the trial is intended to check.
Can I replace an existing campaign with a graphic of the same size?
Also provide the new material, colours and application side. Identical overall dimensions do not mean the complete application is unchanged. Mention changes to the glazing, blinds or the situation behind the window as well.
Does this only matter for a summer campaign?
Base the assessment on the conditions in which the graphic will remain installed. A campaign starting in autumn may later encounter different sunlight and use conditions. A short campaign duration alone does not establish suitability.
Prepare your window advertising enquiry
Send your idea with glazing details, window photographs, dimensions and intended duration. SDLG in Breda agrees the design, material and any installation for the location. The actual application is confirmed after assessment. For general substrate and material choices, see our sticker selection guide.
