Can engraved glass go in the dishwasher?

Engraved glass and dishwashers: check the whole product

Engraved glass is not automatically dishwasher-safe. CO₂ laser engraving works on the glass surface itself; the design is not an applied sticker. Whether the complete glass can be machine washed also depends on its model, any other decoration and its care instructions. Have both the engraving and the intended use assessed before ordering.

A frosted engraving changes the surface

CO₂ laser engraving creates a frosted design by locally changing the glass surface. Laser manufacturer Boss Laser describes microscopic fractures that scatter light. The effect therefore differs from a print or sticker.

This explains how the image forms, but does not prove unlimited durability of the glass. Scratches, chips or changes to the surrounding surface can affect appearance and legibility. Also mention existing coloured rims, coatings or other decorations: these need their own assessment.

Read about production and placement on our glass engraving page. This care article focuses on choosing and assessing the complete product in use.

Check the model, use and care advice first

Find the brand and article number and retain the matching care instructions. If they specify hand washing, engraving does not change that advice. Glass manufacturer RIEDEL distinguishes dishwasher-safe glasses from hand-wash-only products in its care instructions. This guidance applies to its own products; it is not evidence for an unrelated glass or an engraving added later.

  • Home or office: explain how the glass will normally be cleaned.
  • Hospitality or intensive use: specify the actual machine, detergents and frequency. Assess those conditions separately.
  • Your own glassware: send product information, photographs and any care symbols before shipping anything.
  • Special products: mention crystal, tempered glass, handmade items and additional decoration.

Suitability for engraving and suitability for cleaning are separate questions. Trotec notes that some hand-blown or crystal glasses can break from heat during engraving. A more expensive glass is therefore not automatically a better choice for laser processing.

Has the engraving changed, or has the glass become cloudy?

Compare the affected area with a photograph taken before use. Does the frosted area follow the agreed design, or is clouding also appearing outside it?

Observation What to check
Frosted design in the agreed position Compare the design, outlines and visibility with the glass as supplied.
New clouding or marks outside the engraving Have deposits distinguished from a change in the glass surface.
Chip, crack or sharp damage Set the glass aside and have its condition assessed before using it again.

RIEDEL distinguishes removable deposits from glass corrosion, which changes the glass structure and cannot be repaired. A photograph alone does not establish the cause. Follow the product instructions when choosing a cleaning method; do not try to sand away a frosted area yourself.

Define what a trial needs to establish before a series

Before a larger order, discuss whether a suitable trial item is needed and possible. Record the exact glass model, engraving, cleaning method and assessment criteria. Check both the appearance of the logo and whether it remains legible on the actual glass under normal lighting.

One successful wash does not demonstrate unlimited service life. A trial is useful only for the conditions actually checked. Keep a reference photograph and the agreed specification; do not change the glass model unnoticed when reordering. For variable names, see our guide to series engraving and data lists.

Frequently asked questions about cleaning engraved glass

Can I use the same instructions for an insulated tumbler?

Assess it as a different product, including its coating, lid and seals. See drinking bottle engraving and follow the care advice for the exact model.

Is hand washing always a solution for unidentified glass?

Hand washing does not establish suitability for engraving or repair damage. Find the product information first. Discuss unidentified or irreplaceable glassware with us before proceeding.

What should I send when asking about an existing engraving?

Send an overview photograph, a close-up of the change, the brand and model and any available care instructions. Explain when you noticed the change and how the glass was cleaned. This helps SDLG assess your question without promising a diagnosis or repair from one photograph.

Have glassware with a logo or name assessed

Specify the glass model, quantity, desired engraving and how it will be used and cleaned. SDLG in Breda assesses the engraving and agrees any trial with you in advance.
