Careful choices make the difference

Engraved wayfinding that helps people find their way

A sign forms part of a route. Consider where a visitor comes from and where the next decision is made, as well as the text on the sign. A clear arrow and short destination at that point can help more than a sign with lots of information.

For several signs, prepare a list per location with the destination, direction, size and fixings. Use the same names everywhere: different names for one room may confuse visitors. SDLG advises on design and assesses logos and detail on the selected material. For outdoor use and installation, we discuss the location and mounting surface.

Options

Clear information where visitors make decisions.

A visitor needs different information at the entrance and at a door. Start by mapping destinations and decision points. Then choose a consistent layout with enough contrast and a text size suited to the reading distance.

Doors and rooms

Identify meeting rooms, offices and facilities. For an individual name or house number, also explore name plates .

Routes and floors

Use the same names and symbols on successive signs. Specify the correct direction at each position; a floor plan or photograph helps organise the set.

A reception that suits your brand

Coordinate indoor signs with your building signage and other branding. For blocks of colour or different formats, we can also discuss suitable signage options.

Choices & specification

Choose the specification for the user.

01

Contrast and distance

View the sign from the direction in which visitors arrive. Text and arrows need to contrast clearly with the material; reflections, lighting and the background wall matter too. Tell us the actual reading distance. Where needed, split multiple destinations between an overview sign and smaller follow-on signs.

02

Indoor or outdoor

Describe the location and conditions: reception, corridor, damp room or building exterior. Suitable engraving laminate, acrylic and metal each have their own appearance and options. Choose material, surface and fixings for the use and cleaning requirements; we confirm outdoor suitability for each specification.

03

Fixings and additions

A flat sign, stand-off fixing or other mounting needs a suitable surface. Use consistent dimensions if rooms or departments may be added later.

This page covers general wayfinding. Tell us beforehand if signs have a safety function or need to meet specific accessibility requirements; these require a separate assessment.

Preparing your enquiry

This helps us get started.

  • A list of rooms and required destinations.
  • Photographs or a floor plan showing each sign position.
  • Exact text, languages, pictograms and arrow directions.
  • Required sizes, material and fixings.
  • Number of signs, delivery address and any installation request.

Give each sign a unique number and put it on the floor plan too. Use separate columns for location, exact text, language, arrow direction, size, fixings and quantity. Define left and right from the visitor’s viewpoint. Use the same sign numbers to check the set and request specific additions later.

From idea to proposal

What affects the price?

The number of unique designs, size, material and fixings affect the price. A consistent set needs different preparation from individual signs in different formats.

SDLG works from Breda and delivers signs throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. Visits and collection at Heusing 10K are by appointment only. Installation in Breda and the surrounding area is agreed separately for the mounting surface, access and position. See our contact details and directions to our workshop.

Useful to know

Frequently asked questions.

Have a different question? Ask us about your project.

Can the signs follow our brand style?

Yes, we can coordinate typography, layout and a suitable logo with your style. Engraving does not automatically reproduce every brand colour. If colour is essential, we also discuss other specifications.

Do you help plan the route through a building?

We advise using your floor plan and destinations. You check the final routes, text and sign positions. A formal safety or accessibility plan is not automatically part of the project.

Can we add new room numbers later?

We can discuss this based on the earlier specification and material availability. A sign number or order reference helps identify the right size, text style and fixings.

Can you also install the signs?

Delivery and installation in Breda and the surrounding area can be agreed. Tell us the mounting surface, height, access and required schedule. We quote installation separately. For other locations in the Netherlands and Belgium, we can ship the signs and agree suitable fixings beforehand.

Can several languages appear on one sign?

We can discuss this. Decide which languages are needed and use the same order on every sign. More text needs more space: a shorter destination or larger format may be clearer. Supply the final translations; these are not automatically derived from the Dutch text.

Can one sign serve both directions of travel?

This depends on position and visible sides. An arrow that is correct from one side may not indicate the right direction from the other. Show both viewpoints on the floor plan. We assess whether two sides, two separate signs or another position would work better.
