Industrial identification plates: choosing the material

An industrial plate needs suitable material, correct data and readable layout. Start with the environment and how the plate will be used.

Industrial identification plates: start with their use

Choose material for industrial identification plates according to how they will be used. A plate inside a dry control cabinet faces different conditions from one mounted outdoors on a machine. SDLG assesses material, data, dimensions and process together.

Start with the working conditions

Specify indoor or outdoor use and exposure to moisture, cleaning agents, heat, oil or friction. Include fixing method and reading distance. Industrial use alone is too broad to determine a suitable material.

For identification and machine plates we need final data and dimensions. Engraving a supplied symbol or mark does not automatically certify compliance with a standard. Required content and purpose must be agreed beforehand.

Stainless steel: surface marking and depth are different choices

For stainless steel engraving or marking alloy, surface finish and desired contrast matter. A dark surface mark differs from tactile engraving that removes material. Specify the required result and subsequent use.

A material name alone does not guarantee resistance to every cleaning agent or temperature. For critical applications, we discuss requirements and any trial or further assessment. Technical background: Trotec on annealing and surface marking.

Aluminium: specify the finish

Untreated, anodised and other aluminium finishes give different starting points. Coating and colour affect visibility. Describe more than aluminium and preferably supply a product specification or sample.

A lightweight plate can suit a machine, enclosure or inventory item. We assess legibility and fixings together. Read more about aluminium engraving.

Engraving laminate: use demonstrably suitable material

For labels and panels, suitable two-layer laser engraving laminate can provide clear colour contrast. Check the product specification for laser suitability and intended environment. Trade names, HPL and different engraving laminates must not be treated as interchangeable materials.

Not every plastic is suitable for laser processing. We confirm composition first; appearance alone does not establish suitability. See Trotec’s material guidance. For control panels we also need positions, cut-outs and mounting data.

CampPlus: an aluminium appearance on plastic

For CampPlus we made 111 Rowmark plastic plates with a brushed aluminium appearance, engraving and cutting the plates and four fixing holes. Discuss appearance, composition and fixing separately; this example does not establish suitability for every industrial environment.

CampPlus: changing material also changes the specification

CampPlus initially asked about stainless steel 316. After discussion, the delivered plates used 1.6 mm Rowmark plastic with an aluminium appearance, four holes and an adhesive backing. Available stock helped fulfil this particular order. Alternative materials for industrial identification plates must still be assessed against your application. Record agreed material, thickness and fixings alongside the approved image so a similar appearance is not mistaken for an identical specification.

Frequently asked questions about industrial identification plates

What information helps specify outdoor industrial identification plates?

Describe the location, mounting surface and expected conditions. Identify the information that must remain readable and the fixing method. “Outdoor use” alone is not enough to choose the specification for your application.

Does a metallic appearance mean a metal plate?

No. The CampPlus plates have a brushed aluminium appearance but are plastic. For industrial identification plates, specify actual composition and thickness. Appearance, weight and application requirements are separate considerations.

Can I supply only a damaged plate as a reference?

It helps explain the intention but cannot confirm missing wording or material specifications. Supply readable source data and check dimensions and holes. Identify which features must remain and which may change.

How do I prevent a fixing hole interfering with text or a code?

Supply artwork and hole positions using the same dimensions. Define available text space and any clear margins. Consider the mounted plate: a bolt head or frame may hide information that was readable on the loose plate.

What should I retain for repeat identification-plate orders?

Keep material, thickness, dimensions, fixings and approved layout with the data version. Report changes in use or mounting surface. The same logo alone does not establish the complete specification of the previous order.

Have your industrial identification plates assessed

Specify environment, available space, quantities, fixings and required data. For existing parts, material details and photographs help assess the options carefully.
