Careful choices make the difference

Tag engraving for identification and organisation

A tag or small label is often read quickly: on a key, case or set of parts. Choose one main purpose. A large number helps when issuing equipment; a short description adds context. Too much text on a small surface makes the label less useful.

Consider the hanging hole and clearance around it as well as outer dimensions. A ring or fixing may cover part of the text. Use a consistent number format for a batch. SDLG assesses logos and detail on the chosen product; material and finish are matched to use and required legibility.

Options

Recognise what belongs together.

A label is useful when its identifier matches your records. Plan fixed numbers, names or a combination. Use the same format for each set and allow for future additions so another batch can follow the existing layout.

Keys and rooms

Give keys a short code that matches your records. For a branded keyring, also see the keyring page.

Equipment and issue

Identify separate sets or loan equipment with a label. Discuss fastening and which information the user needs at a glance.

Sequential numbers

Supply a sequence or list for processing. For several variable fields or scannable information, see batch engraving.

Choices & specification

Choose for the label’s intended location.

01

Surface and contrast

Metal or anodised aluminium labels can give different engraving results. We compare required legibility with the material and finish.

02

Shape and fastening

Round or rectangular: choose for where the label will be used. Specify hole size and fastening and allow space for the ring. If a tag can turn over, information on both sides may be practical. We assess this for each model.

03

Use and reading distance

A tag on a keyring experiences different wear from a plate on a storage case. Specify contact with other metals, moisture, cleaning and required reading distance. This helps us choose material, engraving and fastening together.

These are identification labels. An engraved number alone does not prove inspection, certification or access rights. For detailed machine data, see identification plates.

Preparing your enquiry

This helps us get started.

  • The label’s purpose and what it attaches to.
  • Required shape, dimensions and material.
  • Exact text, logo or complete number list.
  • Quantity per variant and required spares.
  • Operating conditions and required delivery date.

Supply codes as text to preserve leading zeros, such as 001 rather than 1. Use one row per label with code, any text on the back and quantity. Check duplicates, missing numbers and spares. See batch engraving for data-list guidance; for scannable labels, see QR code and barcode engraving.

Useful to know

Frequently asked questions.

Have a different question? Ask us about your project.

Can you engrave a continuous number sequence?

Yes, on suitable labels. Specify first and last number, any leading zeros and exceptions. A complete list is clearer for a non-continuous sequence.

Is a ring or other fastening included?

Only if specified in the proposal. Tell us how and to what the label should attach so the parts suit one another.

Are the labels suitable for outdoor use?

We assess this for each material, finish and fastening. Describe weather exposure, wear and cleaning; there is no universal outdoor guarantee for every specification.

How is a tag different from an identification plate?

A tag or label usually carries a short code or name. For machine data, several fixed fields or a serial number, see identification plate engraving . Information and available space determine the best specification.

Can one numbering sequence contain letters and digits?

Yes, supply the exact codes, including capitals, hyphens and leading zeros. Use the same format as your records. Check that characters such as the letter O and digit 0 can be distinguished in the chosen layout.

Can the number go directly on the product?

On a suitable product, direct engraving may be an alternative to a separate label. Material, finish and accessible position determine options. See engraving your own products or tool engraving and send product details first.
